Diving Richelieu Rock: A Dive Instructor's Perspective

Nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, and seahorses are just a few of the macro life forms that make Richelieu a haven for underwater photographers. On one dive, I spent nearly half an hour photographing a pair of ornate ghost pipefish camouflaged among the crinoids.

Dive Conditions

The best time to dive at Richelieu Rock is from late October to early May. During this period, the visibility can range from 15 to 30 meters, and the water temperature is a comfortable 27-30°C (80-86°F). Currents can be strong, especially around the full and new moons, but they bring in nutrient-rich waters that support the incredible marine biodiversity. It's essential to be comfortable with your buoyancy and current diving techniques to fully enjoy what Richelieu has to offer.

Personal Highlights

Every dive at Richelieu Rock is unique, but a few experiences stand out. On one dive, I remember being surrounded by a massive school of chevron barracudas, forming a shimmering tornado around me. On another occasion, I witnessed a pair of mantas performing a graceful ballet, looping and swirling in perfect harmony. These are the moments that fuel my passion for diving and keep me coming back to Richelieu Rock.
